CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Noctis Lucis Caelum
Canon: Final Fantasy XV
Canon Point: After the final fight, when he's ascending the steps of the throne. (Final chapter of the game.)

Appearance: Noctis stands at approxiomately 5'8" - 5'9", sporting black hair and dark eyes. He has a fairly slender build and pale complexion, and at age 30 it starts to become noticeable that he's finally growing out of his "baby face"; he has a strong jawline, stubbled with facial hair, and an aquiline nose. bloop.

It's also worth noting that Noctis always dresses in black, though this is more a sign of status than a conscious emo fashion choice. As royalty, he's been trained to carry himself well, standing straight with evenly aligned shoulders when things are Serious. Even outside of this, he carries himself with a modicum of poise at all times -- though he is certainly not beyond crossing his arms and letting his posture relax when in familiar company.

Age: 30

Setting: The world of Eos is that of both magic and modern technology. People drive fast cars, they have cellphones and texting and gaming apps. They dress in a modern fashion (sometimes questionably, though) and skyscrapers reach for the heavens in the Lucian capital city of Insomnia. But the same city is protected with a magical wall via an almost all-powerful Crystal, most of the battling in the game is done with swords and staves and daggers, and giant old thunder men with epic beards can be summoned down to smite one's enemies. The developers open the game with This is a fantasy based on reality, which sums up the idea of the setting rather concisely.

Personality:

I will be taking Noctis from the end of the game, which means that he has reached the “end” of his character development, and thus has changed in a few important ways since the beginning of the game. Regardless, I feel as if the starting point is just as important as the end, and so I intend to write about his personality in its full scope. Just note that, in the game, he will skew closer to how I describe him near the end of this section!

By default, being born into royalty on Eos means that certain expectations are required of an individual — responsibilities, a strength to lead (or at least to satisfactorily exude a certain ideal, a certain image), and a willingness to sacrifice parts of oneself for the sake of the Kingdom. The Lucis Caelum line is no exception to this rule. Having to shoulder these expectations successfully is another matter altogether, and a large part of what Noctis Lucis Caelum's character arc hinges upon throughout the narrative.

Noctis grew up idolizing his father, seeing him more than just a dad, but as a King. He saw strength in King Regis, and as a result, an example of what was expected of him when it would be his turn to take the throne. Having lost his mother when he was just an infant, it's safe to say that Noctis perhaps grew up a little too quickly. He didn’t want to be troublesome for his father, and therefore adopted an outward manner of what he thought was, basically, acting “mature”. In reality, this skewed Noctis towards being more aloof than outgoing, more withdrawn than outspoken. In a sense this stifled his development — though by no means did he have a bad childhood — simply because Noctis is actually a very emotional individual. Beneath the surface he’s sensitive, his aloofness is actually due to being a touch shy in awkward situations, and he’s quick to engage himself in many parts of the emotional spectrum with little to no help from others. Happiness comes to him just as quickly as anger and irritation, as does sympathy and sorrow. But while all of this might swirl within him, condensed in the pit of his chest, rarely does he allow it to overflow except in the most dramatic or extreme circumstances. What his upbringing did sincerely teach him was an air of control (to a certain extent) and a habit of taking things into consideration, though attached to it was a wry sense of sarcastic humor to boot. The Word of God has described Noctis as suffering from ennui; and while this might just be a convenient excuse to add “likes sleeping a lot” to his list of character traits, it’s fair to say that some of this ennui comes from his uncertainty, unable to take the steps needed to figuratively move forward with what’s expected of him, and therefore stewing in his own brand of listlessness more than necessary.

If Noctis were more confident about taking the throne, and the swath of responsibilities that come with it (inheriting what appeared to be a war with no end, for one), the young prince wouldn’t have to feel the need to put on an act in the first place. But Noctis is indeed insecure about becoming king at the start; and when his father is murdered, his entire world shatters, and he’s forced to take action, to shoulder responsibility without time to really consider if he wants to. Because it was never a matter of wanting to, it always came down to duty and fulfilling that duty. And understandably, that armor begins to crack under the pressure, and it takes a stern reliance on his friends to put him back on track. Because Noctis treats those he cares about as equals, no matter his own royal title. He has a comfortable rapport with them, and they’re more than eager to call him out on some of his more childish personality traits — being stubborn, sleeping too much, hating vegetables, making them stand around forever while he fishes, etc. He cares deeply for them, and is just as loyal to his friends as they are to him. Friends and family are immensely important to Noctis, revealing a surprisingly caring individual. Even throughout the game, he takes odd jobs from strangers (like any true RPG protag would): catching fish to feed stray cats, helping fix a broken down car, saving chocobos from monsters. He might utter the odd complaint, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that he still helps other people, simply because he wishes to.

Taking away all notion of royal titles and inheriting thrones, Noctis is more of a normal young man than one might initially think. He makes dumb jokes with his friends, he plays video games, he has a soft spot for cats, he hoofs it around Lucis through the heat with the rest of his party, and he hates bugs. This reveals two contrasting things about his personality: That Noctis grew up sheltered, and still retains a lot of his childish qualities because of it, and that he’s doesn’t have any particularly extravagant tastes or self-indulgent preferences just because of his title. When it comes to what he takes enjoyment from, Noctis is a very straightforward individual.

As time passes and the stakes grow higher, Noctis learns to accept his role as King, and as a consequence, someone who must give his life for the sake of saving the world from impending eternal darkness. It’s worth noting that he’s melded by necessity at first, and the conscious choice of acceptance comes later; he is pushed by circumstances beyond his control, playing straight into the hands of the main antagonist, and it’s only when he’s released from a ten year slumber does he exude a sense of being able to shoulder his responsibilities. The light shines brightest in the dark, and this wholeheartedly applies to Noctis. When he has his back against the wall and the situation is dire, Noctis will always opt for the path he knows is right. His innate desire to be a good person often manifests itself as a willingness to sacrifice his comfort for the sake of doing what’s right. This is seen in the most extreme light at the end of the game, where he’s finally accepted his fate as Chosen King to end the dark by sacrificing his own life. It isn’t easy — he spends one final time by the campfire with his companions, and the tears begin to flow in earnest — but that doesn’t matter. His duty to his land and his people come first, and he gives himself to it fully in the end.

And so, in a twist of irony, the “maturity” that Noctis had been trying so hard to exude only ten years before comes to him more naturally and without pretense. This isn’t to say that his entire personality has changed (he still hates vegetables, what a dork, and other heavily ingrained facets of his self aren’t so easily swept away), but he shoulders the burden with more grace and poise. He carries himself with more of a regal bearing than before, with a confidence he didn't possess prior. He remains aloof in some ways, but that’s more out of habit than it is uncertainty or an attempt to act more grown-up. And finally, but most importantly, Noctis finally feels able to call himself a true king in earnest.

Canon Abilities/Skills:

AKA, a cry for help re: figuring out what should be nerfed.

  • STRENGTH / DURABILITY - At his current canon point, Noctis had absorbed the power of Eos’ Crystal for ten years. As far as lore goes, this means Noctis is basically god mode, as he’s the only one that can defeat the Big Bad (whom even the gods couldn't do away with). However, this also conflicts with gameplay, given that Noctis is still able to be killed by daemons and other foes before reaching the final boss, if the player isn’t careful.

NERF SUGGESTIONS: So as a way to balance these conflicting qualities, I’d like to dial this back significantly, perhaps even blaming it on the symbiote as an in-game reason. Noctis would be stronger than a normal human and able to take more punishment than most before falling, but he’s not invincible by any means. I’d like to skew him closer to “normal” in this category, especially given the rest of his abilities will make up for this change.

  • WARP MAGIC - A special inherited ability of his bloodline, Noctis is able to warp from point A to point B, even through solid objects as long as he has line-of-sight with his destination, leaving a trail of translucent blue magic behind him that fades after a few moments. There’s a limit to the distance, however — he can’t warp across an entire city, or off into the horizon, but warping several hundred feet away (even vertically) is viable for him. He cannot do this indefinitely without growing tired, so he does need a chance to recover if he warps quickly and several times in succession. He is also able to use this magic to literally phase through attacks (swords, spears, etc.), but this also uses his “MP”, and is not something he can abuse without becoming tired over time.

It's worth nothing that this magic also works as a "hammerspace" for Noct when he chooses to use it as such. This allows him to "store" his weapons in said hammerspace until he calls upon them, making them appear/dissipate at will. Canonly, he's also shown to keep his fishing rod stored this way, so apparently he can apply this to mundane things as well. With his discretion, he is also able to let others take advantage of this -- in the game, his three companions also can call their weapons forth out of thin air. This is only because Noctis is granting them his power in a limited capacity.

NERF SUGGESTIONS: Perhaps the symbiote continues to conflict with his canon powers, therefore making him unable to warp with the same capacity and efficiency as before. Also, the ability for him to "share" this ability with others is defunct.

  • ARMIGER - “Armiger” refers to the knowledge and wisdom of his royal ancestors that’s been passed down to Noctis; these literally take the embodiment of special weapons that he can call forth with his magic. There are thirteen of these Royal Arms, each that only Noctis can utilize, except in extreme circumstances (see below), and each give Noctis a certain special buff that he wouldn’t have otherwise. They also eat away at the user’s health/energy, so Noct also has a habit of utilizing them sparingly. Noctis can also call upon all thirteen at once, which buffs his power output and grants him unlimited warping abilities for approximately 15-20 seconds. In this state, he can allow others to "borrow" a Royal Arm in battle, letting them use it until it wears off.

NERF SUGGESTIONS: Considering its importance in canon, I would like to keep the fact that Noctis can still use his Royal Arms individually, but with their latent powers being sealed, so they're no different than usual melee weapons now. Using his Armiger in its full capacity could remain sealed to him for now, though. Unless the mods have a suggestion for terrible consequences of using it in a dire situation, which I would gladly accept because I like the drama. :')

  • ELEMANCY / HEALING POTIONS - Using his magic, he is also able to create what are basically elemental spells for everyday people to use. He can find and absorb elemental energy, concentrate it into a physical object (like a flask), and store it for later. This also applies healing items; for example, the developers have stated that the healing potions in the game are basically normal drinks, and it's only via Noctis' special snowflake royal magic that they can be utilized for healing. Because. Final Fantasy.

NERF SUGGESTIONS: Noctis honestly just has Too Many Abilities, so I'm fine with the symbiote blocking this completely from him. This gives me an excuse to have others one day ask him why he's really concentrating hard on that can of soda.

  • COMBAT TRAINING - Noctis has been training how to fight since a young age. As a result, he's familiar with many types of melee weapons, and can even utilize (basic) firearms. He vastly prefers close combat, however, particularly excelling with the longsword archetype.

  • SUMMONING - Having made covenants with the astrals (gods) of his world, Noctis is able to summon them during battle to aid him. Their attacks are devastating, often doing massive damage to an enemy.

NERF SUGGESTIONS: Null and void. Even if it wasn't game-breaking, he wouldn't have any connection to the gods while away from Eos.

  • THE RING OF THE LUCII - A ring that has been passed down from ruler to ruler, and only those deemed worthy enough to protect the Crystal can wear it. The spirits of the old kings reside in the ring (or the ring allows communion with said spirits, idk, it's all very vague), and beyond that, Noctis is able to use three very powerful spells when wearing it. These include Holy (a brief explosion of holy magic directly in front of him), Death (draining the life force of an enemy to cause insta-death), and Alterna (death for errybody!). Using it also drains his MP.

NERF SUGGESTIONS: It's just a piece of fancy jewelry now, basically.

    Symbiote Specialization: Please randomize me!
    Symbiote Ability: See above!

Inventory: The clothes on his back, the (defunct) Ring of the Lucii on his finger, and while hidden thanks to his magic, technically his Royal Arms and his own personal Engine Blade. (Basically, his sword.)

    Rescue Write-up:

He had been so close to ending it all.

To push back darkness, to one day cast the world back into the light — his bones and his muscles and every single atom in his body screamed, and each lingering step leading to the throne felt not unlike scaling a mountain. The throne, empty and silent. The throne, awaiting its final King to sit, and to give his life in one final bid to finally bring peace back to Eos.

The idea alone should be simple, really, even if in execution it felt like a heavy weight on his shoulders, an invisible force pushing down on him. There shouldn’t have been any interruptions, not after what he had been through. This walk, rightfully its own journey, might have been difficult, but at least it was straightforward.

But the air bends around him, and he feels something cold run down his spine. A feeling of dread, of something nigh impossible to comprehend. Creatures that slide out of the shadows, as if made of the night itself, long limbs and red eyes flashing at him — one look and Noctis knows. Despite everything, despite knowing nothing about what could possibly be happening, he feels death creeping upon him. It’s almost ironic, and if he were a more cynical man, Noctis would have scoffed in wry amusement. What was one early death, if he were only minutes away from the other, the one that sat waiting for him on that throne?

A world of a difference, as it would turn out.

He’s already called forth his sword, knuckles gripping white on its hilt. He knows it’s futile, but he refuses to roll over and die. He’ll fight, like he’s always fought. Even as darkness overwhelms him, even as they’re too fast, too difficult to comprehend, even as a hand reaches to to him, promising him life, promising him another chance—

Noctis takes it, grabbing with equal parts hope and desperation.

Soon, he'll find himself awakening again.
